Ormonde Jayne Tolu & a prize draw
 By Marina Tolu by Ormonde Jayne is a surprising fragrance. Described as a rich, sensual oriental built around the heavenly trinity of Tolu balm, frankincense and myrrh, it smells...almost nothing like that on me. Or on a blotter. Which is fine with me. Tolu balm has always seemed to me to have a fairly prominent floral quality. Its floralcy reminds me of one of those orchids, which have a touch of spice, even a hint of incense in their velvety, blossoming sweetness. Orchid is, in fact, declared as one of the notes in OJ Tolu, along with several other floral accords, orange blossom, rose and lily of the valley. What suprises me is that, of all flowers, it is the latter that is the dominant note on my skin. What's more, the presens of juniperry berry and clary sage in the top, makes the verdancy of the muguet even stronger. As a result, the composition is rather green, to my nose, with herbs and lily of the valley leading and the resins being in the supporting roles. Which, again, is fine with me. Rich orientals are not exactly few and far between. The drier, more understated ones are somewhat harder to find. And as the weather gets warmer, a perfume like Tolu would wear beautifully, its comparatively subdued character making it wonderfully versatile- an appropriate choice both for an office and for a dressed up evening out. Unfortunately, I haven't found an oriental yet that I can comfortably wear in the hot, humid Southern summers. I generally stick with something lighter, like Pacifica Mediterranean Fig (my current favorite). But I'm on the hunt for more versatile fragrances that I can wear without swooning in the summer, since my warm weather collection is sadly lacking.
I think my favorite oriental for warm weather is probably Theorema, since it's fairly transparent as far as orientals go. Guess I should find a replacement (shakes fist at Fendi).
Opium Fleur de Shanghai is my choice on the rare hot days here in coastal Cali!
I'm not sure at all I found an oriental for summer but I wore "l'eau ambree" several times last year-it was really good, most of the times. I'm still looking...

I think I'd second the Shalimar, although having just relocated to Seattle maybe I can try something heavier. Frankincense and myrrh are my go-to scents as soon as the air turns crisp, I'd LOVE to find a summer version that's wearable. Katherine B.

I don't know what constitutes an oriental, really, mostly because perfumes I always heard were orientals, like Opium and Cinnabar, were terrible on me so I ignore them. I do like to wear light incenses in summer, though, like Heeley Cardinal and Smell Bent Tibet ur Bottom $.
I like to mix up the "seasonal" aspects of perfume on occasion, wearing summery orange flower perfumes in the middle of winter and rich, velvety perfumes in the summer heat. Shalimar, Cinnabar, and Coromandel along with heavy florals such as Amoureuse and Amaranthine. In small amounts, they have a wonderful radiance in the summer heat - well, as much of a summer heat as we get in Seattle :)

When the asphalt was melting - literally - last summer, I found that some big orientals worked wonders, if lightly applied.
I discovered and fell in love with Shalimar on such occasion, and similarly loved wearing l'heure bleue under the un-relenting august heat.
Whatever: Shalimar for me is always one of the best perfume options, and I fond this particularly true in the two extreme (temperature-wise) seasons: winter and summer.
Hmmm... picking my brain the best I can come up with is Shalimar as well, vintage EDC of course so perhaps the key is citrus?

HdP 1826 is wonderful for warm weather with the incense, citrus and violet over the vanilla and amber. Other favourite orientals for warm weather would be Baume du Doge and Idole, since they both wear light on me, and the saffron pulls the composition towards spice rather than vanilla.
La Maison de Vanille Vanille Noir du Mexique (whoo, that's a mouthful) is my favorite oriental...it's more of a gourmand but with a big enough hint of spice for me to pretend that it's an oriental :D
My favorite oriental fragrance for warm weather is Etat libre d'Orange Nombril Immense, and I love Kenzo Amour Le Parfum too. But I'm still looking for another one. Something with more incense, in the lines of Baume du Doge.

I am going more in the direction of some lighter and brighter orientals in summer, even something people would not classify as a pure oriental, like CdG Series 3 Incense Ouarzazate, where the oriental aspect is hidden behin a nice incense note. I also like Andy Tauers L’Air du Desert Maroccaine and Lubins Idole in Summer.
I like to wear Dior Dune, Chergui and Ambre Sultan by Lutens and Le Maroc pour Elle by Tauer in the heat. Warmer weather makes some orientals bloom.
On another note, my favourite Ormonde Jayne is Ormonde Woman. But would love to sample some more. So I would love to be included in the draw.

I have two favorite orientals that are suitable for summer: Prada L'eau Ambree and Guerlain Eau de Shalimar. EdS might not work on the hottest days of summer, but L'Eau Ambree works anytime for me.

Thanks for having this draw; I haven't yet tried any by Ormonde Jayne. I sometimes wear Shalimar in warm weather, but my favorite is Timbuktu, if that can be counted as an oriental.
I love Black Cashmere in the summer.I love it in the fall, winter and spring, too. Unfortunately my little stash is almost gone. Maybe Tulu could take its place. (Need to try it first!) This is such a fantastic draw! The only OJ fragrance I have is Woman and it's wonderful. I've been wanting to try more of the line. Hmmm, I suppose the favorite Oriental fragrance in my collection for warmer weather would be Chamade for it's greenish, sort of crisp aspect. Thanks for draw opportunity!
One of my favorite orientals is Opium and I have been known to wear it in the summer,just because I was in the mood for it
I live in the South, so it is warm most of the year. I guess that is why my choices are mood dependent and not weather dependent. I wear whatever strikes my fancy at that moment. I've not smelled any of the OJ and would love to be entered in the draw. Thank you.
I also haven't found an oriental to love in warm weather...I turn to No. 18 when it starts getting warm!

My favorite oriental is definitely Shalimar so in the summer I stick with the EdT, the current formulation is good for that. (In the winter I prefer the vintage PdT and parfum). In the hot muggy south, a little Shalimar is a nice thing. At night, I might use a dab of the extrait. Nonetheless, it is my favorite oriental year-round.
I would love to try Tolu - or any of the OJ scents. I've heard so much about them but have yet to sample anything.

I've been looking for an oriental to wear in the warmer weather, but haven't found one yet. I wore Roma year round until last Fall, and am now on a perfume journey; so I would love to try more from the Ormonde Jayne line than Woman (the only one I've tried so far). Thanks for the chance!

My favorite Oriental perfume to wear in warm weather would have to be Sira des Indes by Jean Patou.
I don't know that I wear a lot of orientals in the summer. I did wear quite a bit of Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights last summer. Yes, seriously.

I wear a lot of Orientals, and I wear the all year-round, but I will often times spray my outfit the night before in the summertime. so the impact is lessened for my coworkers.
If I wake up with a craving for a certain scent, I usually dab rather than spray it.
That scents is most likely to be Coco, Commandeer, or Asja. (Opium would most likely be sprayed the night before!)

Oriental Lounge by The Different Company is an interesting, sheer oriental that smells softly delicious on me. I think it would work well in warm weather. Tolu, which is one of my very favorite perfumes (I sometimes think if I had to choose a single perfume--which I don't!--that would be it) is much stronger on me.
I love to wear Chergui in the summer heat, as it really opens up and beautifully blooms. This summer, I'm looking forward to trying a wee bit of Tauer's Incense Rose (an Xmas present). I don't shy away from wearing my heavier fragrances in the summer, but I do drastically cut down on the amount I apply. Thanks for holding the draw!

I actually like Fumurie Turque in summer..
Even though it's very HOT in summer I'm usually inside with air conditioning, so the only change is to the few citruses in spring/summer. The orientals I have and wear are Coco, Insence Rose, and OJ Woman, so I would love to add Tolu. The name and the ingredients really attract me, but the $ flow down has kept me away. My favorite warm weather? UBAR and HOMAGE. Not the usual suspects for "light' scents in heat, I know. I am dying for flowers anytime! I think my favorite oriental for warm weather is Habanita. For some reason, in cool weather I just get a powder-bomb. In warm weather, I get to smell the tobacco! Yum. Also, Hermes's Vanille Galante could be considered a sheer oriental, I guess. I like that one in summer, too. Theorema is another good one. I would love to be entered in the draw. I can't believe I've neglected Tolu, now that you've written this intriguing review. I adore Ormonde Woman and Champaca.
I love Tolu but I've never tried it in the heat. Or even in warm weather. I do like incense in the summer though and wore Bond's Silver Factory a lot last year. I think that counts as an oriental! I like Feminite du Bois all year round, too.
Back when Chamade was one of a small handful of fragrances I owned, I wore it year round, including the summertime (which was when I purchased it). It's still a year round staple. The others would have to be the flankers - Shalimar Light and Un Air de Samsara.

One of my favorite orientals for warm weather is actually Serge Lutens Chergui. It is one of those fragrances that, especially when worn lightly, can be really beautiful in the heat. The only time I wouldn't wear it would be in a very damp heat, because as it's inspired by desert heat, it seems to suit a dry heat better
I really enjoyed my Tolu sample, but hesitate to buy because there is something similar to Dior Dune, and I've worn Dune for 15 years, so maybe I don't need Tolu, too. Pilkington says in clip from her site that it's an "autumnal" scent and that informed my impression of it. That said, I love some of the same perfumes in summer that work in cooler weather: Tocade, Missoni, Loulou. The citrus in Habit Rouge works in summer, too.
Hi wristwaft, I don't think Black Cashmere and Tolu have anything much in common at all. Black Cashmere is so wonderful, I wish they'd bring it back. The wood and incense combined make me think of church pews!
I... I really don't have a proper oriental I can wear when it gets really hot around here. At best I can go with the Pacifica Lotus Garden body butter, but when the wilting heat comes I have yet to not reach for some kind of greenness. Perhaps OJ will change my mind...?

Our summers are rather cool, cooler by far than Seattle summers, so wearing an oriental in summer is usually not difficult. But a few years ago, during a heat spell, I really took to wearing Montale's White Aoud outside in the heat. Much to my surprise, it bloomed beautifully. These days, I more often wear Roxana's Q, which in the liquid form on me smells more of amber than of oak. It's rich and beautiful. Or perhaps Roxana's Aurora, which also on me is ambery and camphory and lovely.

Surprisingly enough my favorite oriental in warm weather is Tom Ford's Black Orchid (okay, so technically a floriental, but still).
It goes without saying that when it's warm I use a VERY light hand when applying, and I would only ever wear it in the evening during the spring and summer, but on the right night I really happen to enjoy it. The heat seems to amplify the tropical aspects and downplay the gourmand, at least on my skin. It still has mega sillage, but when I have been bold enough to spray a small amount on it hasn't veered into cloying/choking/suffocating territory...not yet anyway.
I find that I can wear Coco in most any weather, and it's the only oriental I can wear even in the summer. Please enter me in the draw!
I've worn Havana Vanille and Ambre Sultan in warm weather. But mostly in transitional periods, like a warm fall day.
Last summer I tried wearing orientals in the summer. Fleur Oriental worked as did Le Maroc Pour Elle and of course Shalimar.
I would love to try the Ormonde Jayne fragrances; the line has interested me for some time.

My favorite oriental is Bond No. 9 Chinatown, which I tend to wear any time of year!
Depending on your definition of oriental, my summer favorites would be either the CDG Incense series (with Ouarzazate and Zagorsk the favorites), if they count, or L'Artisan Safran Troublant. All of these are edts and won't take over the room if I accidentally over-apply. The more feminine vanilla orientals can suffocate you in our hot, humid summers.
Orientals in the summer is pretty much a route I haven't taken yet. The farthest I got was wearing L'Artisan Vanille in the summer, where as I would classify it more as a winter, "warm you up" fragrance. It was surprisingly good however.
Orientals definitely meant for warm weather though are the Opium summer flankers. I bought Fleur de Shanghai for my Mother and she wears it beautifully.
I love to wear Fleur Oriental in warm weather.

Thanks for this great draw! My new favorite oriental is acutally Estee Lauder Sensuous. (I think it's considered an oriental) On the warmer days I just wear the lotion, but in the cooler months I like to layer with the spray too. It lasts for a long time and with a light touch, it never gets overpowering.
My favorite summer oriental is definitely L de Lolita Lempicka. I can't wait to wear it on a hot day.
A little dab of Cimabue by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is my choice. Yum!

Does Ambre Sultan count as an oriental? I certainly wear that one in the summer. I find L'Air du Desert a little harder to wear when it is very hot, though I do it once in a while.
Shalimar Light (nee eau Legere) is my favorite warm weather oriental.
I got the sample set several months ago and adored Tolu. Then, on second thought, I gave it away...only a few weeks later, I was dying for it again. Please enter me in the draw so I don't have to buy the whole discovery set again!
I haven't really worn oriental's in the summer and only recently heard they they really work well. So, this summer I'll be sure to give them a try!

Eau de Shalimar works nicely as a summer oriental. The citrus and vanilla have been amped up, and there seems to be a smidge of incense streaked into the base. And speaking of incense, another scent that works surprisingly well in hot weather is Comme des Garcons' Kyoto. It's dry enough to not be overwhelming during the summer.

My favorite oriental to wear in warm weather is Mahjoun by DSH, I tried and loved it in a warmth of Boulder Summer. Another one that works -- Anne Pilska, dabbed, not sprayed. Lovely too!

I'm new to the concept of wearing orientals in the summer, but I will try it this summer. My first attempt will probably be L'eau Ambree. I've been wearing it frequently this winter and I'd love to see how it works in warmer weather.

Hmmm, summer usually has me thinking light and citrus-y, but I've been known to spritz on my fave -- Opium -- on more than a few sultry summer evenings.
I love love love Chanel Egoiste (not Egoiste Platinum) in the summer. And Feminite du Bois any time at all.
Interestingly Tolu's floral notes are very weak (almost nonexistent) on me - but Tolu is wonder- and beautyful. (Marina, have you tried the Tolu bath oil ?)
I like a dab of Tom Ford Noir de Noir for an evening out; sometimes a little Lyric.
Original Opium edt, Bal a Versailles ditto. I can wear anything, really, as long as a very little bit is used!!

I find that 'Nu' works well for me in summer. I used to wear 'Cinnabar' all the time, as did my mother. But I'll get an urge to wear a certain perfume and just wear it, no matter what the time of year it is!
I didn't know I liked orientals until L'Heure Bleue. After that I tried Samsara and Shalimar, but for warm weather I go back to my darling Blue Hour.
I just love Chergui. It is such a comforting and wonderful scent. I enjoy it in all seasons. I've yet to try more orientals. Talu sounds beautiful.

I must be crazy but I wear Bal a Versailles year round. It doesn't get overly hot here though and I only use a dab so maybe that's why.
I love love oriental scents in the summer! I think good old Shalimar is my favorite. Vintage and modern and Shalimar Light. I love what how she blooms in the heat.
Casmir (Chopard) always works well in the summer due to its peach note. Cafe by Cafe (don't be a snob--it's wonderful!) is brightened by a nice citrus note so it's quite refreshing. A new favorite is Sensuous Noir--it's dry in a cooling way.

Thanks for running this draw. I love wearing l'Air du Desert Marocain during the summer - somehow it suits warmth just as perfectly as it does cool weather, so it is just as good during the day as at night. Never too heavy.
Like several others I have previously shied away from orientals in the summer but I'm really impressed with Idole and will give it a go this summer (when I'm not at work!) OJ Woman is the perfume I would take to a desert island if I could only take one so the sample collection would be a joy!
What a wonderful draw! I'll wear vanilla-based scents all year long and a light spritz of Coromandel or Prada L'eau Ambree will warm up an over-air-conditioned office nicely!

Dune is the only oriental I wear when it's hot -- and oddly, Dune ONLY smells good to me in the heat. It blooms in the summer, while in the winter it can smell a little harsh and sad.
