Perfume Review: S-ex and Lust by S-Perfume

Perfume Review by Tom

Of course Colombina has already reviewed these two, but at March's behest, I had to try. (And really, you ladies are way too quick on the draw for me, I'll always be about three steps behind you all; all I can hope for is to be fractionally as entertaining.)

S-ex. Unlike in Colombina's experience, S-ex's marine notes are immediately apparent on me: a salty, slightly iodine scent (I hesitate to call it a marine note) that does, when added in with the light leather notes and musk become a very nice skin scent. If there's anything S-exy about it, it's the salty-skin accord's slight resemblence to, how do I put this in a family blog? I think the nice people at S-Perfume refer to it as "Spirit of Life". Moviemakers in Van Nuys call it "the Money Shot". I'll just call it "Where can I order this?"

Lust. In her review Colombina wrote of this as reminding her of Borneo 1834: it does seem to be a close cousin. I get leather and cedar in the opening, as well as Borneo's bitter cocao. A cool camphor joins in the middle, as the cocao becomes more assertive: this is the most Borneo phase, but I only smell a ghost of patchouli. The patchouli becomes more pronounced at the musky drydown: and that musk! It's very light, which is a good thing: this is not an MKK or a CB Musk, this is Human Existence. Luckily it's just a touch: this is Lust, not Kink.

Lust is available for $27.00 for .5 ounces at their site, while S-ex is $67.00 for 2 ounces. I've read that they are also available at Fred Segal, which is dangerously close to me. I'm not quite lemming for these, but that's more out of a respect for my New Years resolution to get my Visa bill to look less like my phone number. Like most resolutions, it may fall before this is posted

Note
At some point in the past few weeks, I sort of dared Colombina to send me the rest of her Human Existence. To my, er, Joy? Horror? She did. She dared me to layer it with stuff. Once I have a pot of water on the boil, some Comet, a wire brush and perhaps have renewed my passport, I will, and will post about it.

I love the humor and the absurdity of it all. What is it that makes us want to smell like, well you know? I mean, I suppose we could skip the shower after, but come on. I still want to try this and secretions magnifique. I will say this, though. I would take the smell of the money shot over another friggin' fruity floral any day. Keep up the fabulous reviews Tom, I absolutely love them. I wrote one and now I'm afraid to write another because of the comparisons. LOL.

Oh, please post another! Yours are so good!

It doesn't precisely smell like what I was alluding to, but it's a s-exy simulacrum (thank goodness it's not literal.

I will be going to the sniffapalooza in Los Angeles in February, and I think that a bottle off S-ex will have to come home with me if it's really at Fred Segal

Tom, it was such a fun and witty review to read! I have got to go and sniff both of them now. I'm so curious as to how they'll smell on my skin. Can't wait for your review on Human Existance.

I am, um, enjoying S-ex right now (it is really impossible to write about this scent). I do like it a lot, but when I asked my husband what it smelled like, he said "nothing much." Oh, well!

Ah, the Money Shot!!! I keep thinking about wearing it, but consider the implications when I'm picking up the kids at preschool. The smell is quite distinctive on me...

Lust I could not stand. I just thought it was gaggingly awful. Nobi teasingly reminded me recently that in my review I wrote "this is the single most revolting thing I have ever smelled," or something along those lines. I need to re-sniff but I'd give Human Existence and Miller Harris Rien a shot at that title...

Great review!

Tom,
I wish I had some S-ex left to wear it today in honor of your review. But there is no S-ex in my house.

(tee hee, I am enjoying this like I am 13.)

Wonderful reviews as always!

Brian,
I'll repeat what Tom said *whines*:
Oh, please post another! Yours are so good!
I've been waiting for another of your reviews ever since I read the first one.

Great reviews! What does it say about me that I prefer Lust to S-ex? Like M, writing about these brings out the inner adolescent. :-) In all seriousness, I think Lust is very wearable and pleasant, but, at the end of the day I prefer Borneo and MKK or CB Musk.
Can't *wait* to hear your layering adventures w/ HE. I shall look forward to trying the combos that didn't send you to the emergency room.

I like the sound of Lust. As for S-ex, not sure if I like a salty accord in my scents...even if it's reminiscent of you-know-what. ;-)

All I can say, at the risk of being banned from the internet forever, is if I have that smell I want to have come by it honestly.

Seriously, are body secretions the hip new accord? This is going to make me long for the good ol' days of the fruity floral before it's over.

Tom, is I tested these last year and wasn't completely in L-ove with either of them. However, I am thinking that I need to get me a bottle of that CB I Hate Perfume Musk. What do you think?

March-

I am wholeheartedly behind the idea that you should wear this not only to pick up the kiddies, but to the next parent/teacher conference: let 'em know who's boss!

I'm sure March sent me a sprinkling of her S-ex a while back. Hell, a guy should remember such a thing but, man, I've been so active recently. I'm gonna go sniff her out...

Columbina-

The only S-ex in my house is in that sample....

Elle-

Unlike March, I liked Lust. I liked S-ex better though. I agree with you, of I did not own the 3 you mention I could justify owning Lust.

"the combos that didn't send you to the emergency room" LOL! ;-)

I'll tell you one that I tried: HE and AG Hadrien. I wrote to Columbina "Lemon-fresh Zombies"

Stylespy-

Let's hope that it doesn't become a new fad. I like it when it's well done, like here. I don't think I need to smell Britney's take on it.

Kelley- you need CB. You really do.

Give it a sniff and then write about it: I want to read what you think of it.

Okay. I dug. It's Dzing! sprayed onto some kelp with a trace of fresh s-perm too (though low on the swimming pool chlorine factor). There's a slight fruity something (PCP or post-coital parp?) there too before it gets saltier and saltier. But you need to stick your nose up close to get these things. It's a funny old thing. And as the salt increases pretty damn intensely (it's making me thirsty) a more standard perfumy something seems to be emerging.

Okay, you win today's quote contest, but now I have to clean the hot tea I just spit all over my computer.

Tom, did I tell you that your Montale samples were found? Yes! They were at my Aunt Sue's law office. It's a long story. She has assured me that they are on their way to you (as of Wednesday). Let me know when they get there.

You don't have to twist my arm! I am already leaning in that direction anyway so I am sure a tiny amount would be enough. By the way (this is getting way off topic), do you know if Barney's still has any Chergui left? My decant is just about out!

Yes, Barneys in Beverly Hills has some. I might have to wear that tomorrow. Did I review this one?
